During a pitch meeting with Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures, Margot Robbie, the renowned Academy Award-nominated actress and producer, shared her excitement about the upcoming meta-comedy. To illustrate the film’s potential, she drew a comparison between it and Steven Spielberg’s classic “Jurassic Park.”

Margot Robbie’s passion for cinema and her prominent role in Hollywood have made her a standout figure akin to Tom Cruise. Her affinity for the world of filmmaking led to a meeting with Mattel, where they discussed the prospects of collaborating with her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment. However, it was Robbie’s compelling pitch for the movie that ultimately convinced both studios to greenlight the project.

In a pre-SAG-AFTRA strike interview with Collider, Margot Robbie discussed the potential for her upcoming film “Barbie” and drew comparisons to successful movies with visionary directors. She emphasized how pairing a big idea with a talented filmmaker has led to significant success for studios, citing examples like “dinosaurs and Spielberg” from “Jurassic Park.” Robbie confidently pitched “Barbie and Greta Gerwig” as a winning combination, even though she acknowledged that her billion-dollar prediction might have been ambitious.

However, it turns out Robbie’s instincts were not far off the mark, as the presale data indicates strong commercial prospects for the movie. With AMC already selling an impressive 20,000 movie tickets for the opening weekend double feature, “Barbie” is projected to make an estimated $90M to $125M on its opening weekend, according to Deadline. These advanced ticket sales surpass any other film released in 2023 so far and are even on par with “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which eventually earned over $2.3 billion worldwide.

The success of “Barbie” lies in its ability to resonate with a broad audience, from film enthusiasts to families. Margot Robbie emphasized that the movie was meticulously crafted to appeal to everyone who has a connection to the iconic fashion doll and her impact on pop culture. Director Greta Gerwig envisioned the film as a big inclusive party, ensuring that the comedy and storyline could be enjoyed on multiple levels by various viewers.

While Margot Robbie compared “Barbie” to “Jurassic Park,” Greta Gerwig had her own set of inspirations for the human world and the whimsical Barbieland portrayed in the movie, drawing from classics like “An American in Paris” and “The Godfather,” as revealed in her interview with Letterboxd.
