DJI has returned with a revamped version of its Osmo action camera, surpassing its predecessor, the Osmo Action 3, and challenging GoPro’s HERO11 Black. While GoPro has yet to release a new version in the past year, DJI is going all out to push the boundaries of its Osmo line.

Equipped with a larger sensor, enhanced low light performance, and D-Log M recording for improved dynamic range, DJI has taken significant steps to dethrone GoPro and establish itself as the leader in the action cam market.

However, some may question whether the DJI Osmo Action 4 has done enough to claim the top spot, considering it still offers 4K video and surprisingly lower resolution photos compared to its previous model.

In this review, we’ll delve into the features of the DJI Osmo Action 4 to understand what sets it apart and whether it’s the right choice for your rugged video content needs.

Introducing the DJI Osmo Action 4

It is somewhat surprising that DJI decided to release a newer version of the Osmo Action in such a short time, considering it had less than a year for research and development. However, rapid updates and releases are not uncommon in the camera market, so it’s not entirely unheard of. Despite the quick turnaround, the new camera shares many shooting features with its predecessor, making it essentially the same in that aspect.

The most significant enhancement lies in the adoption of a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, the same one utilized in various DJI drones like the Air 3, Mini 3 Pro, and Mavic 3 Pro. This sensor is a notable improvement over the previous 1/1.7-inch sensor. Although the camera still offers 4K video, it now supports 120p and 10-bit HDR, promising a cinematic experience, especially when combined with the D-Log M and its improved dynamic range.

Remaining true to its focus on rough-and-tumble video and photo use, the DJI Osmo Action 4 retains its RockSteady and HorizonSteady stabilization systems, a fully waterproof camera body, a quick-release mount, and the familiar dual-screen and USB-C charging cable/ports as seen in its predecessor.

The main focus when considering the new DJI Osmo Action 4, and perhaps any future action cameras, is how it stacks up against the latest offerings from GoPro. As we previously discussed in our comparison between the GoPro HERO11 Black and the HERO11 Mini, GoPro has been striving to maintain its leading position in the action camera market.

Despite GoPro’s best efforts to outshine DJI and other competitors, their latest camera versions have still left some aspects to be desired, leading content creators to explore other options. This competition is beneficial for consumers like us, as it encourages innovation and improvement.

Currently, GoPro’s offerings are still superior to the latest DJI Osmo Action 4, particularly with their 5.3K video capabilities (although limited to 60p with the HERO11 Black). However, it’s worth noting that DJI has surprisingly equipped the Osmo Action 4 with a larger sensor than the GoPro HERO11, boasting a 1/1.3-inch sensor compared to GoPro’s 1/1.9-inch sensor.

The battle between these two major players in the action cam market continues, and as technology advances, we may see the dynamics shift in the future. For now, consumers have the advantage of choosing from a range of compelling options.

Specs and Pricing

The standout features of the new DJI Action 4 are its impressive high-definition video capabilities and its wide dynamic range, which I like to call “d-range” for short. With this improved dynamic range, colors will appear more vivid and clear, benefiting from better temperature calibration and intelligent auto-exposure and white balance features.

The Action 4’s low-light performance should also be noteworthy, a crucial aspect for travel and run-and-gun content creators seeking to capture action-packed moments in various conditions. The specifications below provide more details:

  • 1/1.3″ CMOS Sensor, Wide 155° FOV
  • Front & Back Color Touchscreen Displays
  • Up to UHD 4K120, 2.7K120, 1080p240
  • Fast Charge Technology, Voice Control
  • RockSteady 3.0 Image Stabilization
  • HorizonBalance & HorizonSteady Leveling
  • Waterproof up to 59 feet
  • Built-in Mics for Stereo Audio Recording
  • Price: $399.00

While it remains to be seen how early hands-on reviews will compare the DJI Osmo Action 4 to GoPro’s offerings, the similar price point of both cameras guarantees they will be compared extensively for some time. Ultimately, your choice may come down to your brand preferences and loyalties.
