Packed with mystery, melodious tunes, and emotional depth, “Cinnamon” traces the path of an aspiring vocalist portrayed by Tony nominee Hailey Kilgore and a minor criminal, played by David Iacono, as they embark on a transformative journey.
The noir thriller was brought to life through the skilled editing of Josh Porro, using Adobe Premiere Pro.
Porro’s journey into filmmaking began at the American Film Institute, where he started as an assistant in the communications department. He persistently pursued a role in editing and eventually secured it. He spent eight full-time years at AFI and continues to freelance there, learning the intricacies of editing along the way.
His editing education took an unconventional path when he studied abroad in South Korea, where he had to produce a TV show, take animation and film history classes, and edit a short film on actual film, using an old Steenbeck editing machine. This hands-on experience forced him to learn on the fly, providing valuable skills.
Porro usually starts projects with a touch of panic and self-doubt but soon settles into a routine, setting achievable goals for each day or week and steadily progressing.
One standout moment from the project was the opening title card shot, which involved extensive searching and debate over the accompanying music. Porro cherished this part of the process because it allowed him to listen to great music while getting paid for it.
One significant challenge in post-production was ensuring the story’s impact was maximized. The film initially establishes a budding romance between two characters who then embark on a crazy endeavor, spending the rest of the film apart. The team had to trust the script and stay true to the story’s vision.
While initially intimidated by Adobe Premiere, Porro came to appreciate it during the project and has since chosen it for all his subsequent work.
His favorite Premiere Pro tip is mapping the ‘Mute/Unmute Clip’ function to Shift + A, a small but significant time-saver for auditioning different takes and audio options.
George Saunders, known for his masterful short stories and the novel “LINCOLN IN THE BARDO,” inspires Porro with his unique storytelling style and ability to pack a punch in a short amount of time.
The biggest career challenge for Porro is balancing work and family life, but he believes it forces him to prioritize what’s truly important, much like editing and storytelling.
Porro’s workspace at Sugar Studios in Los Angeles offers a view of the Hollywood sign on clear days, a feature he never tires of appreciating.
