The New Kid on the Block
Currently in the prototype stages and funded through IndieGoGo, the Nodal One Focal Reducer is designed to be compatible with a wide range of lenses. These include popular options such as the Atlas Mercury and Orion anamorphic primes, Sigma FF ART Primes, DZO Vespid primes, Laowa OOOM zoom, as well as vintage lenses like Helios and MIR primes, LOMO anamorphic primes, and Cooke anamorphic primes. The final production unit aims to offer versatility and accommodate various lens choices for filmmakers.
The Nodal One Focal Reducer is designed to increase the field of view by a factor of 0.71x while providing a 1-stop exposure boost. It also includes a user-shimmable feature, adding convenience for users. However, Joshua Chiara has stated that all units will be calibrated before they are shipped to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, the focal reducer will offer a back focus adjustment and a mount lock system to enhance stability during use.
As of now, the focal reducer is planned to be available for RF mount only. However, Chiara has expressed intentions to expand its compatibility to include E Mount and MFT mount in the future, providing a broader range of options for filmmakers.
Nodal One vs Metabones
Although the Nodal One Focal Reducer is currently available for sale at a price of $799, it will have a higher retail price of $995. Comparatively, the Metabones ARRI PL Lens to Canon RF-mount T CINE Speed Booster offers the same focal reduction at a lower cost.
What sets the Nodal One Focal Reducer apart from Metabones is its inclusion of a back focus system and user-shimmable capability, allowing users to adjust it according to their needs.
Additionally, the Metabones focal reducer is specifically designed for the Zeiss Compact Prime line of lenses. While it can be used with other lenses, Metabones advises against using lenses with rear elements protruding more than 14.5mm from the mount.
In contrast, the specifications of the Nodal One are not explicitly stated, but it appears to have wide compatibility with a diverse range of lenses, offering filmmakers greater flexibility in lens selection.
Should You Get It?
If you frequently use lenses designed for larger sensors on your Super 35 camera and want to expand your options, adding a focal reducer like the Nodal One to your kit could be beneficial.
