Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes shaking Hollywood, our efforts have been focused on gathering narratives that provide insight into the experiences of professionals working within the industry.

Towards the end of the previous week, the Los Angeles Times conducted an interview with Spencer Grammer, renowned for her portrayal of characters such as Summer Smith on “Greek” and “Rick and Morty.” On the picket lines, Grammer shared her personal account of how, despite her involvement in successful projects like “Greek” and extensive work as a voice actor on “Rick and Morty,” her earnings fell short of the threshold required to qualify for health insurance coverage. This revelation gained considerable attention after being shared on social media, prompting fellow actor Alan Tudyk to express his thoughts on the dismal compensation voice actors often face. Tudyk pointed out that even after contributing to every episode of a “Rick and Morty” season, the earnings could amount to a mere $15,000.

This level of remuneration would hardly suffice for a decent living in the expensive city of Los Angeles. Before dismissing these roles as minimal effort, it’s crucial to understand that voice actors invest significant hours in the recording booth, perfecting lines in various tones and delivering alternative versions. Their work extends beyond just recording, involving participation in table reads, collaboration with writers, and juggling various other responsibilities.

The narratives shared by those participating in the strike hold immense significance. They shed light on the realities of the entertainment industry’s compensation landscape, a topic that warrants widespread attention. While Hollywood certainly generates substantial revenue, these profits rarely trickle down to adequately compensate the individuals powering the industry from behind the scenes.
